FAQ’s

How are the coaching sessions conducted?

Coaching is curated to meet the specific needs of the author. We don’t want writers being charged for services they may not want or need, so after discussing your book with you to determine how we can best help you while also saving you time and money, together we will create a plan that is efficient, creatively executed and helps you meet your goals.

Sessions can be conducted over video chat or the phone, and emails between sessions are welcome! Each session is about 45 minutes to an hour, and will focus on how to troubleshoot areas where you may feel stuck. We help map out writing goals, timelines, structural issues, and provide support and accountability throughout the entire process.

What does the editing process look like?

Editing is the number one most important step when pursuing publication. After we discuss your book, the first round will focus on development and structure. I will return the manuscript to you for your review and rewrites.

When you have completed them, you will send them back to me and I will begin line editing, examining the structure and flow of each sentence and ensuring that the authors voice and message is distinct and clear.

After I return this round of edits to you, you will have the chance to review all suggestions and either accept or decline them.

Once that is finished, you will send the manuscript back to me where I will finish with a final proofread, examining punctuation, spacing, and fixing any minor grammatical errors.

What commitment is required?

An openness to suggested changes we make that will strengthen the overall integrity of the book is encouraged. However, we value the authors voice and input equally, and strive to publish books that showcase collaboration, creativity, and professionalism.

How much does cover design cost?

The cost of cover design will be determined by the designer once they discuss your idea, and can create an estimate of the time it will take. We know that pursuing book services is an investment, and will happily work out a plan with you to ensure that our designers are compensated fairly while also working within your budget.

How much does editing cost?

Editing prices vary depending on the length and complexity of the book. Most books are charged $.025 a word, which includes three rounds of editing: developmental, line editing, and proofreading. If the book is in need of extensive research or structural changes that will take a great deal of time, the cost may be a bit more.

How long does the process take from editing to publication?

This depends on the length and content of your book, as well as the time each author needs for their rewrites and edit reviews. For shorter books (12,000 words or so) the average editing time is 4 weeks for each round of edits. For longer books (30,000 – 90,000 words) the average turnaround time is six weeks per round. Formatting and cover design take 3-4 weeks on average, but this depends on the complexity of the design and the style the author is envisioning.

What if I want to work with a different book cover designer?

You are not required to use Pagefire Press to create a book cover. While our designers strive to bring your vision to life and will listen intently to what you have in mind, we want you thrilled with the cover that graces your book. We can help connect you with outside resources that may be able to offer what you are looking for!

“Valuable Feedback”

“I’ve worked with Kelcey for a few years now, on a variety of projects. She is compassionate and genuinely cares about the projects she’s working on.

With my book, it can be so vulnerable to put your story on paper, and she has made that process a joy! Kelcey provides valuable feedback and so many ideas around organization and story telling.
I love working with her!”
